PKD-Free Babies Family on WZZM ABC13 Michigan

Published June 6, 2025

WZZM ABC 13 in Grand Rapids recently interviewed Caitlin Cronan, a mother who defied the odds to have a baby without polycystic kidney disease (PKD) through genetic testing and in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

PKD, a hereditary condition affecting 600,000 people in the U.S., causes cysts to form on the kidneys and can lead to kidney failure. Caitlin’s grandmother died from PKD complications, and her mother, along with two of her four siblings, also has the disease. Knowing there was a 50% chance she could pass it to her children, Caitlin and her husband, Matthew Frezza, initially decided against having kids.

Determined to change that, Caitlin underwent genetic testing, confirming her PKD diagnosis. Although she hasn’t shown symptoms, she and her husband pursued IVF with pre-implantation genetic testing to ensure their child wouldn’t inherit PKD. They successfully welcomed their PKD-free daughter two months ago and graciously allowed PKD- Free Alliance to be a part of their journey.

During the segment, Dr. Heedeok Han, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, educated viewers on PKD’s health impacts. He explained its symptoms, including kidney stones, high blood pressure, and cyst infections, and emphasized its role as a leading cause of kidney failure in people under 50.

Caitlin expressed deep gratitude to the PKD-Free Alliance for their guidance and ability to financially assist families, as well as to her doctors, whose expertise and care helped her navigate the journey. The PKD-Free Alliance’s PKD-Free Babies Initiative provides funding and assistance for families seeking IVF with pre-implantation genetic testing. Those interested in learning more or applying for grants can visit pkdfree.org.

Caitlin's story shines a light on the life-changing impact of genetic testing and dedicated medical care, offering hope to families facing similar hereditary challenges as they celebrate their first Father’s Day together.
