If my partner or I have a suspected PKD diagnosis, how can we confirm this diagnosis to meet grant eligibility?
Genetic testing is an important step in identifying specific genetic mutations and confirming a diagnosis. It is also essential for the development of future PGT-M testing.
Alliance staff can provide information about common genetic testing options for suspected kidney disease patients, including Natera’s Renasight™.
How many PKD-Free Babies will the Alliance fund per eligible family?
At this time, PKD-free can provide 1 grant (both PGT-M and IVF/PGT-M) per family.
What if my insurance provides partial coverage for PGT-M services? For example, what if they only cover one testing cycle, and I require additional cycles?
Once insurance benefits for PGT-M testing have been exhausted and the patient is required to pay out of pocket, PKD-Free will step in to provide coverage.
Is it possible I’ll encounter initial out-of-pocket expenses?
Ex. What if a genetic company wants me to pay for screening services before I know embryo counts?
Many genetic companies require full payment for testing and setup before services can begin. As a result, grant recipients who are not yet aware of the total number of embryos being submitted for testing may be responsible for upfront costs.
Thankfully, most genetic companies are willing to work with PKD-Free through the reimbursement process once the final number of embryos is confirmed.
Am I required to work with clinics affiliated with the Alliance?
No. PKD-Free firmly believes in patient autonomy. Not all clinics and genetic companies will be the right fit for every grant recipient, and our goal is to make genetic testing of embryos more accessible to help prevent the inheritance of PKD. However, these companies offer further cost-saving measures for our approved recipients.
Are there any time constraints for grant funding usage?
For our IVF and PGT-M Grant, recipients have one year from the date the grant approval is sent for signature to utilize the funds.
For our PGT-M–only Grant, there is no set timeline once the grant approval has been issued.
